Simple Stress Management Tips

We all have the ability to manage stress but that ability may well depend on what is causing the stress and how stressful the situation is. Most of us can handle small amounts of stress and, in fact, that level of stress may help us to perform better. But what about managing seriously stressful situations such as fighting on the front line, being a fireman or a policeman or a stand up comedian to the more mundane but equally stressful getting a divorce or moving house?

How do people cope in those situations? Many seem to take it in their stride whereas others would be so stressed out they would be both physically and emotionally ill and to them this level of stress would certainly be unhealthy. To those that seem to cope the stress is very much a positive factor but to others their performance suffers and is definitely a negative factor.

When you are stressed out it is impossible to perform normally. Your body will react differently to others and to situations. While some may perform at a higher level others may actually suffer body disorders and illnesses.

Stress will make your life and the lives of those closest to you miserable. If you are suffering from stress the quicker you manage to find ways to cope with it the better. You may not be able to achieve a stress free life however finding the techniques that will work for you will certainly live a far healthier lifestyle.

Stress affects the whole being and the whole personality of a person. It affects a his or her mental ability, judgment, and it can put his or her social, emotional, spiritual and physical life at risk. Unmanaged stress can lead to serious health problems such as heart disease and high blood pressure.

So what can you do to relieve your stress levels? Before thinking about specifics, before you can even begin to manage your stress you need to identify the root cause of the stress and not find ways to deal with its symptoms. So many people take different forms of medication which only serves to control the physical or emotional symptoms.

Once you have identified the root cause of the stress then you can think of appropriate ways of managing it:

  • Knowing what the root cause is in itself is a powerful way of reducing your stress levels to a tolerable level if not eliminating them totally.
  • The key to relieving stress is to manage it. Take a long hard look at your lifestyle, your needs, your skills and your abilities. So many people have eliminated their stress by changing jobs, taking on a lesser management position, re-evaluating what is important in their lives now. If you find yourself empathizing with these people, decide what needs to change in your life and change it.
  • One simple but highly effective technique is time management or task management. How often do you find yourself running about all over the place or late for appointments simple because enough time was not allocated to each activity? Take on less during the course of the day. Stop taking piles of work home in the evening and at weekends.
  • Learn to relax more. Find more fun things to do, Enjoy yourself.
  • Exercising is also a great stress reliever. It does not need to be too strenuous. By exercising you are looking after your body which in turn works to look after your mind. The two are inextricable linked.
  • Following on from that point that is why practicing other techniques such as yoga and meditation will significantly reduce stress levels both physically and emotionally.
  • If you find yourself still unable to manage or relieve your levels of stress it may make sense to seek some counseling. Perhaps you have yet to identify the root cause of your stress and an experienced counselor will be able to help you.

Life is tough and getting tougher, more competitive and faster. Some cope with these changes more easily than others. If you find yourself unable to cope at times remember using stress relieving techniques to deal with the symptom of your stress will not help you in the long term. Identify the root cause and you are more than half way to relieving the stress you are under.
